TLIF0020 – Safely Access The Rail Corridor

Safely Access the Rail Corridor – TLIF0020 (previously known as RISI) is a nationally recognised competency. An individual cannot work in the rail corridor without acquiring this competency and it is essential to complete this course to attain an RIW (Rail Industry Worker) card.

This course teaches the important safety requirements, hazards and legal obligations that must be identified and controlled when working in the rail corridor. This includes: hand signals, work site protection management and basic rules for working in the danger zone.

Course Structure

The day will consist of 3 main components and the optional Category 3 Medical.

Firstly, your trainer will take you through the theoretical knowledge needed to work safely in the rail corridor.

This will be followed by an in-field practical observation, where you will be shown particular aspects of the rail corridor and demonstrate your ability to perform workplace activities.

After your trainer has gone through the theoretical and practical aspects of the course, you will then be asked complete a written assessment exam.

Please note that if you have chosen to under go your Category 3 Medical with Train Me that it will take place at some point during the course day.

Optional Category 3 Medical

To obtain an RIW card, participants must pass a Rail Health Medical examination. Train Me offers an optional Category 3 Medical to all participants of the Safely Access the Rail Corridor course, which will take place on the same day as the course for an additional cost.

Statement of Attainment

You will receive your Statement of Attainment for Safely Access the Rail Corridor (TLIF0020) the following business day. Please note: if your course took place on Friday or over the weekend your Statement of Attainment will not be sent until the following Monday.

Course Requirements

Entry requirements

All participants must have a USI (Unique Student Identifier) number to enrol in this course. If you do not have a USI, please visit the USI Website and create one.

Language and literacy requirements

This course will be taught in English and will require a sound understanding of English literacy. If you believe you may encounter challenges with English literacy, please contact us on 02 9733 3600 and we will assess whether you have the capabilities required to undertake this course.

Age requirements

Individuals must 17 years of age or older. Individuals under the age of 17 need to complete an Eligibility Form, contact us on 02 9733 3600 or enquiries@trainme.com.au to start the eligibility process. We will submit the form on your behalf to Transport for NSW for authorisation. Please allow 10 business days for this process and we will contact you when a response has been received from Transport for NSW.

What you should wear

As per Transport for NSW Guidelines for the SARC Course and Rail Corridor Safety, we please ask that the following requirements are met for all students (failure to do so will result in being turned away without a refund): Safety Boots, Long Sleeve Top, Long Pants (no red or green clothing to be worn).

What you should bring

Please bring your Government Issued Photo ID. For all participants completing the Category 3 Medical, your ID is required to be sighted by the AHP Doctor.

Please be advised that lunch is not provided, please bring your own lunch or there are a few small cafe’s around.

Parking

At our Chullora venue, there is limited free parking surrounding the complex, as well as free street parking along Anzac St.

If you are catching public transport, the closest train station is Regents Park Station and is only a short walk to the venue. The closest bus stop is located on Hume Highway at Anzac St.

If you are attending our Sydney CBD venue, there are multiple surrounding car parks, some offer an early bird discount if you book online in advance.

If you can not find any parking in nearby car parks, Martin Place Station and St James Train stations are only a short walk away.

Medical FAQs

Why do you need to pass a medical examination?

To obtain an RIW Card, participants must pass a Rail Health Medical examination. Train Me offers an optional Category 3 Medical to all participants of the Safely Access the Rail Corridor course, which will take place on the same day as the course for an additional cost.

Excerpt from the Rail Industry Worker (RIW) Website:

“The National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers underpins the system for monitoring the health of rail safety workers in Australia. The Standard was developed in consultation with industry, rail unions, rail safety regulators and health professionals to provide practical guidance for rail transport operators for managing the risks posed by the ill health of rail safety workers. 

Rail operators accredit doctors and other health professionals to perform the assessments. Accredited health professionals then carry out the assessments using the Standard.

All health assessments for rail safety workers are conducted in line with the current edition of the National Standard.”

What is a Category 3 Medical?

A Category 3 Medical is the minimum requirement for those who need to work around the track. The rail health medical will test your ability to hear instructions, move to a safe place, and maintain an awareness of your surroundings.

What will happen during the medical?

1. You will converse with a general practitioner and inform them of your medical history. This includes any pre-existing conditions and current medication you have been prescribed.
2. Hearing Test – A test that determines the sensitivity of your hearing and awareness of sound around you. If you have a hearing aid, ensure it is fully operational for your assessment.
3. Sight Test – A series of tests performed that will assess your vision and ability to discern objects around you. If you have visual aids (contact lenses, glasses, etc), please ensure you use them as part of your assessment.
4. Drug & Alcohol (Urine) Test – To screen for drug/s and alcohol, you are not allowed to be under the influence of drug/s or alcohol when working in the rail corridor.

When will I receive my medical results?

You should receive your results 2-4 business days after completing your medical. Your D&A test will be sent to pathology and analysed before any results can be released.

What to wear on the day

Please wear long pants, long sleeve shirt and safety boots. Ensure the clothing you wear will allow you to preform a range of movements. You may be asked to bend, kneel, squat and stretch as part of your assessment. You will not be required to undress for this assessment.

What you will need to bring

If you are on medication, please bring the prescription and any other documentation, to assist with the Drug and Alcohol screening.

The Category 3 Medical can be added to this course for an additional fee.

– When scheduling your CAT 3 medical with your SARC course on weekdays, the cost will be an additional $255
– When scheduling your CAT 3 medical with your SARC course on weekends, the cost will be an additional $305
– When booking just your CAT 3 Medical, the cost is $300

How to get your RIW Card with Train Me

Step 1: Complete our TLIF0020 – Safely Access the Rail Corridor Course (RIW / SARC Course)

Train Me is an RTO (registered training organisation) that offers the nationally recognised Safely Access the Rail Corridor Course. It is mandatory for you to successfully complete the SARC Course in order to obtain an RIW Card and start work on NSW Rail Networks. The course is comprised of 3 sections: theory, practical and written exam.

Step 2: Pass a Medical Examination

In order to obtain a RIW Card you must pass a medical examination from an RIW Authorised Health Professional. For your convenience, Train Me RTO can organise a Category 3 Medical Assessment to take place on the same day as your SARC course, this service is provided at an additional cost.

Step 3: White Card

If you plan to undertake construction work in the rail corridor, you must hold a valid White Card. You can apply for your White Card online and Train Me RTO recommends doing so before starting the RIW process. A White Card is mandatory for anyone who is planning to work in the construction industry.

Step 4: Organise & Apply for your RIW card

Once you have successfully completed the TLIF0020 – Safely Access the Rail Corridor Course, your Statement of Attainment and a copy of your Medical report will be emailed to your or your employer if requested. Please note if you are a sole trader, your Statement of Attainment and medical report will be sent directly to you.

Using your own ABN or your primary employer, complete the following steps to apply for your RIW Card:

1. Complete application form (if a login has already been created for the company please ignore Step 1 and proceed to Step 3).
2. When the primary contact first logs into the system they will be asked to pay an annual company subscription. Once payment is completed, full system functionality will be granted.
3. The primary contact may now add workers to the system. This step also includes undertaking the 100 Point ID check online.
4. Once the ID check is approved, you can request a physical RIW Card or virtual RIW card for your worker. The virtual RIW card can be issued immediately, the physical RIW card is printed and posted by Australia Post.
5. You can now assign job roles and competencies to your workers profile, manage drugs and alcohol assessments, and manage worker medical restrictions.
6. Workers can now use their own individual worker portal (myRIW) to manage their roles, competencies, update personal details and view any blocks or suspensions.
